Su álbum debut In the Court of the Crimson King presentó canciones como “21st
Century Schizoid Man”.
Estableció un estándar para
el rock progresivo y recibió un brillante testimonio, bien publicitado el guitarrista Pete Townshend, de The Who, quien lo llamó "una extraña obra maestra".
Pero un año después, el
miembro fundador Mike Giles renunció
y Lake se negó a trabajar con el grupo, aunque se quedó el tiempo suficiente
para cantar en su segundo álbum, In the
Wake of Poseidon.
